Many beginner sewing enthusiasts are wondering what equipment to invest in to start with. Do you need an electronic machine, which - although more expensive - has a lot of functions to facilitate work? Or will a cheaper, mechanical, but less intuitive device be sufficient? A lot depends on your expectations and, of course, your budget.

Why is it worth investing in your own machine?

For many people, having their own machine is an opportunity to pursue their passion or continue family traditions. Regardless of whether you are just learning the secrets of tailoring or the knowledge of sewing is passed down from generation to generation, the purchase of your first own machine arouses a lot of emotions. This is an important decision that determines the comfort of your work and the number of new opportunities. Your own equipment will give you a unique opportunity to carry out original projects, create souvenirs or gifts for loved ones, as well as textile decorations. Who knows, maybe with time passion will become a way of life?

We choose the first machine

The main criterion according to which we divide sewing machines is the way they are controlled. The basic division includes devices:

  • mechanical - classically controlled, manually. Perfect for beginners and people who avoid technical innovations,
  • electronic - supporting sewing processes, thanks to the option of remembering stitches and their sequences and the presence of other functions,
  • industrial - dedicated to tailors.

Currently, the most popular are electronic machines, which are often controlled by touch with the help of a screen. Their most important advantage is the presence of:

  • basic stitches - straight, zigzag, overlock, stretch, blind,
  • accessories - presser feet, needles, machine maintenance products, etc.
  • reverse sewing function, i.e. seam reinforcement,
  • thread tension regulator, seam width, clamping force, i.e. elements that affect the comfort and results of work,
  • option to change the position of the needle relative to the hole in the foot.

The deciding factor for many is the price. Sewing equipment, just like cars or electronic equipment, are available in several price options. You can buy the cheapest mechanical ones for PLN 400-500. We can buy machines with an electronic display in the price range from PLN 1,400 to PLN 2,400. The most expensive machines with 200-300 types of stitches, a touch screen and many functions to help with sewing (e.g. a sewing guide) are priced from PLN 3,000. As you can see, the price differences are huge.

If you do not know yet whether sewing will be your passion for longer and whether it will bring you financial profits, you can start by buying a mid-range device. With the development of skills, you will probably feel like replacing the machine with a more advanced one. Then you will also consider buying a more expensive machine.
